Snippets from the book…

Since I am getting close to finishing the book it’s time to start sharing some of it… let me know what you think in the comments……

how to be handy

This snippet is from the preparation and planning chapter

Always be finishing something…

Allocate the right amount of time for each job to ensure a steady stream of successes. For example, if you only have 30 minutes one day, choose to do something that takes 30 minutes to finish. Don’t get 30 minutes into a job that’s going to take 4 hours to finish. That’s inefficient because when you come back to it next time you’ll waste precious minutes wondering where it was you’d got to. Save the 4 hour job for a day when you have the full 4 hours.

Using this approach means you’ll always be finishing something and that’s a very good thing! Finishing stuff motivates you towards the next task on your list. Plus you’ll not be tempted to leave half-finished stuff all over the place, annoying the heck out of everyone else in the house. The quality of the work will improve too, since stop/start is a poor technique for many DIY tasks. These small successes will add up over time and you’ll have one big fat successful project under your belt. Lovely.

Stay well

Ian
