magnetic bit holder when you have amixture of screw drives

Magnetic bit holder on a driver

Quick tip today and to say a belated Happy New Year! Sorry I’ve been a bit quiet here lately, it’s been all work, work, work, plus it seems parenting a pair of teenagers requires a lot of work also lol! Now, I’ve been adding a magnetic bit holder to my drivers for years, ever since they started to move away from Pozidriv (most common in the UK) screws towards Torx (the T series: sizes T10, through to about T60). Now a typical work day will probably include T20 and T25 …

Top 10 DIY Tools for Home Improvement

This list of DIY tools originally started because someone asked me the other day what tools I used the most. Not my favorite, or the best, or the most expensive, but what tools I used every day. This got me thinking about what I actually carry on me at work. At least half of the tools on this list are in my pockets all the time. Hmm, I thought, this would make a great ‘top 10’ list of simple DIY tools for someone starting out. This might surprise you, but …

don't put tools on the ground

Tools on the ground? Never!

Quick tip… I’m working on an apartment conversion these days and as I finished using my (expensive)  to cut some shelving, I went to put it down, and realised I hadn’t put anything on the ground to protect it. It’s a rule of mine to never put tools on the ground! I popped the saw back on the workbench whilst I reached for a couple of off-cuts from the big scrap pile to put underneath it. Why do I bother? Well, on this job the ground is a mixture of granite …

Quick Tip: How to Caulk Before Painting

Caulking is a must in most houses, new and old before getting the paint out. But first, you should do all your preparation work, because you cannot sandpaper caulk in any way! Nope, don’t even try it. Get everything washed down with a well wrung out sponge and some pre-decorating cleaner (bedrooms etc. don’t need much, but kitchens and bathrooms, hallways etc., need a lot!). Wipe away the cleaner with a big microfiber cloth and a bucket of clean water. Change the water often. Once dry again, sandpaper everything down …

Honda Steering Rack ‘Slipper’ or Yoke Adjustment

My old Honda CRV’s steering has been a bit vague lately and with over 150,000 miles on the clock I replaced a few of the ‘starting-to-show-wear’ ball joints to start off with, but even then, it still tended to ‘tram-line’ when the wheels went over the centre line on the road, grabbing at them quite alarmingly if going at higher speeds. Obviously, this is a serious safety issue. There has also been a rattle when driving off-road that I’d never been able to trace. Turns out the rattle was the …

Checking a Car Battery Condition for Cold Weather Starts

Using a Multimeter to Check Voltage The old workhorse Honda CRV has been a tad slow turning over lately on cold mornings and a recent ‘who left the lights on for ten minutes?’ left us without enough battery power to even turn the engine over at all. Que random mad clicking and flashing dash lamps… Oops! Now, we’ve been running around in the Honda for nearly four years and the battery looked far from new when we bought it, so it doesn’t owe me anything really. It’s often quoted that …

Tool tip: The Kershaw Cinder, the Perfect Keychain Pocket Knife?

An ideal keyring sized knife for everyone I’ll be honest, I have a small ‘thing’ for knives, mostly because I use one several times a day (not counting the one I use for dinner!). From opening the packages I receive daily, to sharpening my pencil and a whole bunch of cutting tasks in between. Because I tend to swap ‘hat’s’ several times a day from doing the school run to fixing something on a clients property, I need several knives, big sturdy ‘bulletproof’ workhorses on site, down to a tiny …
