old window needs restoration

Upcycling a hundred year old window… into a balcony greenhouse!

Part 1: Take one very old window… I saw a picture of this window after trawling the local “stuff for sale” website and immediately saw a project which would turn it into a great little hot-house for our patio or balcony. Many older windows here in Norway are double glazed but not how you imagine them to be. Windows were made with the normal outside set of glazing panes and then another set were added to the interior (called ‘secondary glazing’ in the UK). This was often done years afterwards …

LED Lamp Out of a Wine Bottle

Make This Cool LED Lamp by Drilling a Single Hole. Easily make this cool lamp with a wine bottle and a set of cheap AA battery powered LED string lights. Go find yourself a nice wine bottle from your collection in the garage, (if you need to drink the wine first, it’s best to wait until the following day before making the lamp lol!) Any shape or colour works really, the more exotic and colourful the better. Soak and scrape off any labels etc. Gather together your drill and a …

Make a quick and easy birdtable out of thin branches

We desperately needed a new bird table to cope with the new influx of birds now that spring is here. I had just spent my usual week in the woods taking out the ‘thinnings’ to use as firewood next winter and I had the perfect plan for some of the small stuff that was leftover. A new bird table. It might not last too many years but when they are so quick and easy to make using my air stapler, I’ll just knock up another one! Stay well Ian

Making a garden trellis out of old reinforcing mesh.

I got given some old rusty reinforcing mesh this week and was inspired by a friends garden to try and make something to tame my wild roses. They ramble untidily all over the place and have to be clipped short to keep them off the lawn. Cutting the mesh into strips I left about 1/2″ (12mm) stubs sticking out all round. I then ripped down some old treated timber (wear a mask!) that I had lying around into 1″ (25mm) by 3/4″ (19mm) strips. Laying the timber underneath the mesh ends I …

Firewood racks: How to make an outside firewood store.

We need a large amount of firewood to get us through the long cold winters here in Norway and you can cut it for free if you know who to ask! Also I was dying to utilise the large overhanging eaves on our house to provide a nice and protected storage place for our spring cut wood to season over the summertime. My goal was to find a way of storing my recently cut firewood using materials taken from the woods. Well, I had to use a few screws to hold everything together; I’m not going …
