Making a garden trellis out of old reinforcing mesh.

I got given some old rusty reinforcing mesh this week and was inspired by a friends garden to try and make something to tame my wild roses. They ramble untidily all over the place and have to be clipped short to keep them off the lawn.

wall mounted trellis made from reinforcing mesh for climbing roses

Finished mesh trellis made out of stuff headed for the dump.

Cutting the mesh into strips I left about 1/2″ (12mm) stubs sticking out all round. I then ripped down some old treated timber (wear a mask!) that I had lying around into 1″ (25mm) by 3/4″ (19mm) strips. Laying the timber underneath the mesh ends I was able to accurately drill holes into the timber to slot over the cut ends of the mesh. A screw in each corner completed the frame.

The frame sits away from the wall to prevent any shoots creeping underneath the planks and it’s easy to unscrew the frame and lay it down for essential maintenance.

Stand off plumbing fitting holds frame off the wall.

Here is a tiny one I made out of just one square of reinforcing mesh, this one is just 8″ (200mm) across.

reinforcing mesh to make small trellis

Small version just 8" (200mm) wide.

Then it’s just a case of tying the plant stems to the mesh using string and cutting it back once it gets bigger than the frame from time to time.

tie in roses to mesh trellis

Simply tie in the plant with string to the mesh.

Just shows what you can make out of junk in a couple of hours and a few fixings. Now the roses can go crazy and still look tidy not to mention getting hundreds of flowers now instead of dozens!
Stay well
