Back when the sun was shining we got the chance of a stay in a proper log cabin up in the Hemsedal mountains in central Norway. In exchange for all the fresh air we could manage, some pretty nice food and of course wine, we set about replacing a very worn out kitchen, opening up the walls a little in the process.
It was a real joint effort with the four of us all contributing something different to the mix. Melding together to get everything done in a small space and in a short time was demanding but satisfying and fun. The company was great and I think that we all learned a little more about each other being in such a intense space for a while.
Using your skills, (whatever they are) on a project that directly benefits you makes a real change and is a great feeling compared to simply working for financial reward.
We have been coming to this cabin for our summer break for two years now and can’t wait to go next summer to use the new kitchen space for ourselves. Thanks Rikard and Catherine!
Building something can be a deeply personal thing, as a craftsman you impart a tiny bit of yourself in each and every job you do, in a way making it partly your own. Awkward when it’s someone else’s house!
All the more reason why you should enjoy the projects you undertake on your own home, don’t see them a a chore to be completed, take pride in the job and allow enough time to produce good quality workmanship. Then you’ll have a place to be proud of that you’ll enjoy for years to come.
What are you working on right now?
Stay well
