  1. I want to lay laminate flooring but have quarter round skirting. Do I have to replace this skirting in order fix scotia trim over the expansion gap?

    • Hi Lance,
Well, the answer to your question is no; but, if you are prepared to remove the skirting boards you will get a much more professional look when its all finished.

Essentially you are leaving an expansion gap around the laminate flooring to allow for any possible movement and of course this gap needs to be covered. The two normal ways are [1] remove the skirting and fit the flooring leaving a small gap around the edges which is then covered by replacing the skirting boards or [2] the “cheap” way to do it is to leave the skirtings and fit the flooring leaving a small gap around the edges and cover this gap with a small trim (scotia type) tacked with tiny nails to the original skirting board.

Of course for many option 2 is much easier and won’t damage the decoration etc, but there is no doubt that the floor going underneath the skirting boards looks much neater and a whole lot more professional.

Up to you Lance, you pays your money and makes your choice!
Thanks for stopping by, let us know how you get on!

p.s. there is a third option too if funds allow, you can buy special edge trim to match the flooring that covers any expansion gap. It’s not cheap though but arguably cheaper than removing and replacing the skirting boards…..

      • Thanks Ian,

I decided to use a plastic click board product as this does not require an expansion gap (Moduleo 24830) and the result looks good. Hopefully it will wear well too. It is relatively warm underfoot too.

  2. Have you ever considered about adding a little bit more than just your articles?
I mean, what you say is important and all. Nevertheless think of if you added some great images or video clips to
give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent
but with images and videos, this website could undeniably be one of the very best in its field.
    Great blog!
